We are excited to announce the launch of our new Getting Into Architecture Toolkit developed in partnership with leading global architecture practice and long-term supporter of the Trust, HKS Architects. Targeted at students from age 13 upwards, the toolkit is packed full of information and practical guidance to help young people learn about careers in architecture and the pathways into the profession. The launch is particularly timely as many young people are reaching the end of the academic year and are making decisions and choices without the careers guidance and support that would usually be available to them.
Architecture is a diverse profession and the skills in the toolkit can be applied across many other careers and interests. The booklet explains the process of qualifying as an architect from a Part 1 placement to being a registered architect. In the ‘a day in the life’ pages, HKS employees explain their roles throughout their training en route to qualifying as an Architect, enabling those reading the booklet to begin to understand the skillset needed and the type of environment an architect works in, portraying a well-rounded view of the profession. The booklet is interactive with QR codes that can be scanned by pupils, enabling them to see 3D panoramic views of HKS projects.
Stephen Lawrence himself aspired to be an architect and had taken his first steps towards the career he dreamt of, before his life was cut tragically short at just 18 years old. 27 years later, the statistics for young people from diverse and under-represented backgrounds qualifying and practising as an architect remain stubbornly low. Alongside the toolkit, our Building Futures programme supports young people from disadvantaged and under-represented groups to study architecture, gain work experience and enter the career Stephen loved.
